How do I reset the monitor?

To restore the factory defaults, turn off the monitor. Press and hold the Set button while turning the monitor on. The red light will flash when the factory settings have been restored.

Do I need a signal booster?

The transmitting range for Talon sensors is approximately 45 feet. Inner dual wheels, overhanging bodywork, metal-tinted windows and other obstructions can reduce signal strength. A hard-wired booster may help in these situations.

Does the system measure temperature as well as pressure?

Yes. HawksHead systems measure internal tire air temperature as well as pressure and include high-temperature alarms. This can help identify dragging brakes, overheating wheel bearings and other heat-related problems.

What is the basic setup procedure?
  1. Set the vehicle's cold tire pressures.
  2. Set the monitor pressure to match each wheel on the vehicle.
  3. Enter code mode and install the sensors one at a time.
  4. Exit code mode to begin monitoring.
Why is a sensor not coding correctly?

Coding issues can be caused by an incorrectly sized or bent valve actuator, or by a valve that is too tight or too loose in the tire valve stem. If a sensor will not code on a valve extender, test it on a regular valve stem to determine whether the problem is the sensor or the extender.

What should I do when the monitor sounds an alarm?

Pull over safely and identify the affected wheel and alarm icon. The cause may be a leak, pressure above the programmed limit or excessive temperature. Check the operating instructions for the meaning of each icon, then correct the condition before continuing.

How does sleep mode work?

If the monitor remains motionless for more than 15 minutes, it shuts down the display to conserve its battery. Motion wakes it again. Even while the display is asleep, the system continues monitoring and will sound an alarm if pressure or temperature moves outside the programmed limits.

Which batteries do the Eco sensors use?

Talon Eco sensors use replaceable CR1632 coin-cell batteries. They are available from HawksHead and many electronics or jewelry stores.

How do I test the system?

Place the monitor in the driver's position. Unscrew and retighten one sensor at a time. The fast-leak alarm should activate and then reset on the monitor. Test every sensor regularly.

Do I need special tools to install the sensors?

No special tools are needed for standard sensor installation.

Can I set a different pressure for each axle?

Yes. Axles can be programmed with different base pressures, including tow-vehicle and towed-vehicle configurations.

Can I use tire valve extensions?

Most tire valve extenders work correctly. If a sensor mounted on an extender has a problem, test the sensor on a regular valve stem. Loose extender connections can also trigger alarms.

What can cause an over-temperature alarm?

Possible causes include dragging brakes, an overloaded vehicle, incorrect tire pressure, direct sun on the tires or reflective wheel trim concentrating heat near the sensor.

Do I need metal tire valves?

We recommend metal tire valves instead of rubber valves for external sensors. Inspect all valves regularly.

Why does an infrared thermometer show a different temperature?

The TPMS sensor measures internal tire air temperature. An infrared thermometer measures external tread or casing temperature, which varies with its target, alignment, load, road conditions and other factors.

How accurate is the system?

HawksHead sensors are designed for accurate real-time monitoring. Readings can vary slightly from a handheld gauge because temperature, sun exposure, vehicle load, alignment and gauge calibration all affect measurements. Reset the sensor before making a comparison.

How much air should I put in the tires?

Follow the vehicle or tire manufacturer's cold-inflation recommendation. Program the monitor's base pressure to match that cold-inflation pressure.

How do I test the fast-leak alarm?

With the monitor in the driver's cab, unscrew the farthest sensor. The fast-leak alarm should sound and then reset after the sensor is tightened again. Repeat this test for each sensor regularly.

What comes with the Talon base system?

The Talon base system includes the components required to monitor four wheels: monitor, holder, sensors, batteries, cables, locks and instructions. Additional sensors can be added up to the monitor's supported capacity.

How is the Talon monitor powered?

The monitor has an internal rechargeable battery. The base system also includes a vehicle power cord, allowing you to carry the monitor around the vehicle during sensor setup and tire-pressure adjustment.

Is there a factory warranty?

Yes. The system includes a one-year warranty on defective parts, excluding batteries.

Do I have to enter a special code for each sensor?

No. During setup, the monitor detects each sensor's code as the sensor is installed.

Do the sensors include a security lock?

Yes. HawksHead sensors include their own sensor-locking mechanism.

How should I store the system for winter?

For extended storage, especially in cold weather, remove the sensors and monitor and keep them in a warm, dry place. Mark each sensor's wheel position so it can be reinstalled without repeating setup. Sensors do not use power when they are not under pressure.
